The Mayor

The Mayor is an engaging sitcom that was produced by ABC and graced screens from 2017 to 2018, offering up a unique blend of good old American comedy and thought-provoking political satire. Although it had a fairly short run, The Mayor still made its mark with its freshness and absorbing narration, efficiently filling a void in its cross-genre niche.

Courtney, played by Brandon Micheal Hall, is a hardworking, struggling rapper who is trying to make it big in his native town, Fort Grey, California, despite numerous hurdles. Turning political candidate is not something he initially planned, but he decides to run for mayor as a promotional gimmick to get his music career off the ground. But, in a surprising turn of events, his charm, wit, and popularity within his community lead him to unintentionally win the election.

The show perfectly illustrates what happens when someone with no political experience finds himself, much to his surprise, in a position of power and responsibility. Despite Courtney's lack of traditional qualifications for public office, his sincere connections with the community and genuine desire to bring positive change gradually make him an effective mayor. His campaign slogan, "Help me help you," begins to take on a completely new meaning.

Surrounding Courtney is a vibrant cast of characters who both enhance the comedic value of the series and assist him in navigating the world of politics. His loving and quick-witted mother, Dina Rose, played by Yvette Nicole Brown, keeps grounded with her no-nonsense advice and sarcastic humor. Lea Michele, known for her role on Glee, plays Valentina Barella, a driven and organized city council aide turned campaign manager. Valentina, originally an intern for the standing mayor, Ed Gunt, believes in Courtney's potential to reform Fort Grey and volunteers to guide him through the complexities of public office.

Courtney's two best friends, TK and Jermaine, played by Marcel Spears and Bernard David Jones respectively, also lend their unyielding support to his mayoral endeavors. Not only do they offer comedic relief with their unconventional approach to politics, but they also highlight the deeper themes of loyalty, friendship, and community.

Produced by Jeremy Bronson, a former producer for The Late Show with Jimmy Fallon, and executive produced by iconic actor-comedian Daveed Diggs, The Mayor reflects both the creators' flair for light humor and their adeptness at infusing substantive points into comedy.
