Shaun of the Dead

Shaun of the Dead is an absurdly entertaining, British-made "rom-zom-com," a romantic zombie comedy, directed by Edgar Wright with a screenplay by Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright himself. Although zombie movie enthusiasts will appreciate the traditional elements to Shaun of the Dead - from the gore to the satirical nods to George A. Romero's iconic zombie flicks - the film provides a refreshing spin by focusing on the comedic potential of a zombie apocalypse. There's lots of slapstick humour, witty British dialogue, appealing performances and a distinct visual style to keep audiences engaged.

Simon Pegg's Shaun is a lovely blend of loser and vaguely heroic everyman, making one laugh while feeling an unexpected amount of empathy for his plight. His transformation from a slacker stuck in a rut to a man taking charge of his life - albeit during an undead uprising - is remarkably endearing and hilarious in its execution. Similarly, Nick Frost's Ed is a wonderful creation, bringing much of the film's comic relief while also surprisingly resonating emotionally.
