Star Trek: The Next Generation is the third television show in the Star Trek canon, premiering in 1987, 18 years after the cancellation of the original series, and 13 years after the animated series. The show is set in the 24th century, around 100 years after James T. Kirk’s command. Just like the original show, The Next Generation, or “TNG” as it’s affectionately known, centers on the crew of the Starship Enterprise, led by Captain Jean Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his first mate, Lieutenant Thomas Riker (Jonathan Frakes). With their leadership, the Enterprise continues it’s mission: “To explore strange new worlds... To seek out new life; new civilizations... To boldly go where no one has gone before!" TNG was created in response to the success of the Star Trek theatrical releases. It was released in syndication and ran, successfully until 1994.
