Prom Night is a 2008 horror-slasher film directed by Nelson McCormick and starring Brittany Snow, Scott Porter, and Jessica Stroup. The film is a loose remake of the 1980 Canadian horror film of the same name. The plot revolves around Donna Keppel (Brittany Snow), a high school senior who, three years prior, was terrorized by her twisted teacher, Richard Fenton (Johnathon Schaech). After Fenton kills Donna's entire family, including her mother, father, and younger brother, he is arrested and convicted of their murders. Fast forward to present day, Donna, who has since moved in with her aunt and uncle, is getting ready for her senior prom. However, on the same day, Fenton manages to escape from prison and is on the loose. As Donna and her friends prepare for their big night, they begin to receive creepy phone calls from Fenton, who has made his way to their hotel, where the prom is being held. The group soon realizes they are being stalked and must do everything they can to protect themselves from Fenton's wrath. Brittany Snow delivers a solid performance as Donna, a character who is both vulnerable and tough. She conveys just the right amount of fear and determination as she tries to stay alive while protecting her friends. Scott Porter, who portrays Donna's love interest Bobby, is convincing as the caring boyfriend who will do anything to save Donna. Jessica Stroup, who plays Donna's best friend Claire, provides great comedic relief throughout the film. The film's director, Nelson McCormick, does a good job of building tension, with his use of eerie music and jump scares. He keeps the action moving at a steady pace, never allowing the audience to get too comfortable. The prom setting also adds to the atmosphere, with its fancy decorations and formal attire contrasting with the horror that is taking place. One of the film's strengths is its supporting cast. The side characters all have distinct personalities, making it easy for the audience to root for them. Of particular note are Lisa (Dana Davis) and Ronnie (Collins Pennie), who provide some of the film's most intense scenes. Their characters are fleshed out nicely, making their fate all the more heartbreaking. While the film may not be particularly original, it does a good job of delivering what it promises – suspense and scares. It's a fun movie to watch with friends, particularly those who enjoy horror films or who are fans of the original Prom Night. In terms of flaws, the film suffers from some predictable plot twists and a lack of character development. Many of the characters, particularly Donna's friend group, feel underdeveloped, and the film would have benefited from spending more time fleshing out their relationships. Additionally, some of the horror scenes feel a bit repetitive, with Fenton doing essentially the same thing over and over again. Overall, Prom Night is a solid, if not particularly groundbreaking, horror flick. It's an entertaining way to spend an evening, particularly if you're in the mood for a good scare. Brittany Snow and the rest of the cast deliver strong performances, and the film's atmosphere and tension will keep you on the edge of your seat.
