In the year 2034, the world is a dystopian society where the government has allowed a technology company to create a game called "Slayers" where real-life convicts are controlled by players in a virtual reality environment. The players are connected to the convicts through a nanotechnology called "Nanex," and they control their every move, feeling everything they feel.

The star of the game is Kable played by Gerard Butler, a death-row inmate controlled by a teenage gamer named Simon (Logan Lerman). Kable is a warrior in Slayers, where he's trying to win 30 battles to be granted his freedom. The game is not only controlled by the gaming company, but it's also run by an egomaniacal billionaire named Ken Castle played by Michael C. Hall.

Ken Castle isn't satisfied with just controlling Slayers; he's created a new game called "Society," where players control real people in their everyday lives. People get paid to be controlled, and they do everything from shopping, cleaning to having sex. The catch is that they can never control their lives themselves.

As Kable progresses through the game, he realizes that Castle has created an evil empire that goes far beyond what he initially thought. He's also informed that the Nanex technology is being implanted in millions of people without their knowledge, giving Castle ultimate control over society. They seek out Kable's wife, Angie played by Amber Valletta, who plays a significant role in the movie.
