Free Fire

Free Fire is an action-packed crime thriller directed by Ben Wheatley, released in 2016. Set in the 1970s in Boston, Free Fire is a blood-soaked, adrenaline-fueled gunfight between two rival gangs in a deserted warehouse.

The characters are portrayed as gritty, violent, and unpredictable people. No one is innocent, and each has their agenda in this deal. In the chaos of the constant gunfire and explosions, alliances are formed and broken, and unexpected characters meet their fates. Everyone in the warehouse has a gun and is looking to stay alive, resulting in high-stakes gunfire and constant surprises.

The film is set entirely within the warehouse, allowing the audience to feel the claustrophobic tension and to experience the reality of closed space combat. The characters are not just shooting at each other but running, ducking, and dodging bullets. Every inch of the warehouse becomes part of the action as the groups crawl and flee for cover.

The aesthetic of Free Fire is heavily influenced by the 1970s where the film is set. The clothes and hairstyles of each character compliment that era's look. And the soundtrack features music from John Denver, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and Free. The overall feel of the movie is a mix of dark humor and violent action.

Sharlto Copley and Armie Hammer stand out, often driving the film's humor. Copley is convincing as the foul-mouthed, comical arms-dealer, Vernon. His entertaining character is juxtaposed with Hammer's calm, cool, and collected Ord. Yet, both characters are equally violent, unpredictable, and dangerous. Brie Larson, who had previously showcased her Academy Award-winning range as an actress, displays her action-side seamlessly in her role as the mediator, Justine. In a strong male-led cast, Larson manages to hold her own and puts in a performance that's cool, calm, and competent.

The movie found praise for its casting, action sequences, and the hilarious dark humor. The dialogue is sharp, witty and well written, allowing for character development despite the film's lack of backstory for these criminals.

Free Fire is a great option if you’re looking for a break from the Hollywood blockbusters. It's unconventional and blood-splattering, but ultimately entertaining. It layers tension upon tension until the final shot is fired. It’s violent, profane and funny, all in the same breath.
