Monsters University is a 2013 American computer-animated comedy film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. It is a prequel to 2001's Monsters, Inc. and follows the story of Mike Wazowski (voiced by Billy Crystal) and James P. "Sulley" Sullivan (voiced by John Goodman) during their college years at Monsters University before they became the best of friends and top scarers at Monsters, Inc.

As the film opens, we get a glimpse into Mike's childhood and his dream of becoming a scarer. Despite being told by his peers and even his own guidance counselor that he doesn't have what it takes to be a scarer, Mike refuses to give up and puts all of his effort into attending Monsters University to study scaring.

Upon arriving at the university, Mike quickly realizes that it won't be as easy as he thought to achieve his dream. He struggles with some of the hands-on scaring courses and realizes that he lacks the natural talent that Sulley, the son of a famous scarer, possesses. Sulley, who initially brushes Mike off, eventually meets him in a dispute where he destroys all of Mike's potential belongings. Later, they both land in Dean Abigail Hardscrabble's office, where she explains that they both cannot pass the scaring class until they learn to work together.

From there on, the two become bitter rivals and compete in every aspect imaginable, much to the dismay of their classmates. The film takes us through the different competitions that they both participate in, such as the Scare Games, to determine which fraternity is the best at scaring. Mike and Sulley, unable to join any fraternities due to their previous incidents, create their own team, Oozma Kappa. Their team, which includes an artsy and nerdy character, Scott "Squishy" Squibbles (voiced by Peter Sohn), a huge furry monster, Terri & Terry Perry (voiced by Dave Foley), and a friendly "mature student," Don Carlton (voiced by Joel Murray), sets out to win the Scare Games, despite being underdogs.

As the Scare Games progress, the relationships between the members of the Oozma Kappa improve and they begin to learn from each other, especially after their first loss. As they progress, they come across harder phases of the game, with many teams getting disqualified. However, Oozma Kappa's friendship and camaraderie prove to be their strength, and they work together to succeed in their quest.

The overall film's pacing and structure keep us engaged as it moves between the different storylines of the main characters, especially its transitions from one set piece to another. The film also offers the opportunity to discover more of the monster world and the numerous types of monsters that populate it, each with their particular features and characteristics. This concept helps the viewer understand the monster world better than the first film.

The animation is outstanding, with the bright and bold colors of the monster world revealing the intricate details of each character's movement and shapes, while the sound editing and music appropriately fit each moment in the story. The humor in the film is humorously written, which comes naturally to the way each of the character interacts and the witty lines that they deliver.

Moreover, the well-rounded character development helps bring out the heart in the story; where the search for self-acceptance, brotherhood, and the power of teamwork shine, making the film much more than just a children's movie. The movie concludes with a satisfying ending, making Monsters University a recommendable film for viewers of all ages looking to experience an amusing and captivating story.

Overall, Monsters University is a prequel that stands on its own, with compelling characters, excellent animation, humor, and heart that will genuinely warm the hearts of viewers.
