Where to Watch Creed

PG-13
2015

Creed is a heartening sports drama film that revives the spirit of the compelling and cherished franchise popularly known as "Rocky." Released in 2015, this boxing flick is directed and co-written by Ryan Coogler. The lead cast features Michael B. Jordan, Sylvester Stallone, and Tessa Thompson, who together breathe life into this compelling tale of endurance, ambition, and heritage.

Taking place within the same universe as the legendary Rocky Balboa films, Creed walks us through a new era of boxing and introduces us to a new luminary of the sport, Adonis Johnson Creed, portrayed by Michael B. Jordan. Adonis is the illegitimate son of heavyweight champ Apollo Creed from the original Rocky series; however, he never knew his father, who died before Adonis was born. Despite that, he's drawn practically like a magnet to boxing, his father's sport.

Adonis grew up in and out of group homes in Los Angeles until Apollo's widow, Mary Anne, played by Phylicia Rashad, adopted him. Although she offers him a comfortable life, Adonis decides to give up his corporate job and follow his passion for boxing, a natural instinct that he inherited from his father, with a dream of creating a legacy of his own.

With this dream, Adonis leaves for Philadelphia, where he crosses paths with the former heavyweight boxing champion, Rocky Balboa, performed by none other than Sylvester Stallone. Initially reluctant, Rocky is eventually persuaded to train Adonis, despite his belief that he's left the world of boxing behind for good.

Michael B. Jordan, as Adonis Creed, delivers a phenomenal performance. His portrayal of the young, aspiring boxer showcases a perfect blend of stubbornness, vulnerability, and burning ambition. The intense boxing sequences, where Jordan is seen brilliantly demonstrating his physical prowess, are some of the many highlights of the film.

Creed wouldn't be possible without Sylvester Stallone reprising his role as Rocky Balboa. Stallone steps back into the shoes of Rocky with effortless ease and lends an unmatchable aura to the film. His portrayal of the former heavyweight champ turned mentor is filled with subtlety and charisma, and his chemistry with Jordan perfectly encapsulates the bond that the characters share.

Tessa Thompson as Bianca, Adonis's love interest, emerges as an indispensable part of Adonis's journey in the film. She is not just there as an emotional crutch for Adonis but also has a vibrant storyline of her own. Her character, an upcoming singer, provides an additional, enthralling layer to Creed’s narrative.

Ryan Coogler's influenced and absorbing movie direction is one of Creed’s key strengths. Though part of an established franchise, the movie carries a distinctive feel and tone. Supported by Ludwig Göransson's splendid soundtrack and Maryse Alberti's dynamic cinematography that makes every punch feel impactful, the movie goes beyond a sports drama and conveys a heartfelt story about legacy, identity, and spirit.

The screenplay, by Coogler and Aaron Covington, cleverly pays homage to the original franchise, while also managing to set Creed apart as a thick, stand-alone story. The script successfully revives the charm of the original series and even though it involves boxing, its core is a deeply emotional, character-driven narrative.

Creed is a shining testament to what a spin-off can achieve, and it's a gripping, emotionally resonant story that adds an invigorating, new chapter to the Rocky franchise. The film suffuses the old with the new, delivering a blend of nostalgia and novelty, which both enthuses longtime Rocky fans and intrigues newcomers.

Overall, Creed is not just a boxing movie but a genuine examination of life, where it discusses wider themes, including heritage, legacy, grit, hope, and familial bonds. It's a film that packs a punch, leaves viewers on the edge of their seats with its high-octane boxing sequences, and strikes a chord with its emotional depth, reinventing the beloved franchise and seamlessly handing the mantle from one warrior to the next.
