The Twelve Kingdoms is a captivating Japanese animation series, also known as "Juni Kokuki," that aired from 2002 to 2003. The series, based on the novel series written by Fuyumi Ono, blends elements of high fantasy with intricate plotting, complex characterization, and vivid world-building to deliver an enthralling viewing experience.

The series is principally centered around Yoko Nakajima, a high school student from Japan who, along with her two classmates, gets suddenly transported to a mystical world of the Twelve Kingdoms, after being approached by a mysterious man named Keiki. Thrust into this alternate world filled with mythical creatures and medieval political intrigue, Yoko's life is irrevocably changed. Turned from an ordinary girl into a warrior queen, her journey of self-discovery sets the wheels for a grand adventure.

One of the main draws of The Twelve Kingdoms is the depth and breadth of its world-building. Borrowing heavily from Chinese mythology, the universe consists of twelve separate kingdoms, each with their own unique societal norms, political landscapes, and mythologies. Unlike many series in the genre, The Twelve Kingdoms avoids the stereotypical fantasy realm of elves and dwarves for a more exotic and unfamiliar landscape, where the governing laws and norms can be quite alien to the main characters and viewers alike. This makes for a fascinating exploration of culture clash, societal norms, and the nature of power and leadership.

The series employs a non-linear narrative, shifting between different characters and kingdoms, allowing for significant character development. The complexities of the characters are gradually revealed through a deep dive into their histories and relationships, unfolding a rich tapestry of personal tales intertwined with the larger plot.

With complex themes like identity, responsibility, and morality, The Twelve Kingdoms takes the viewer on an emotional roller-coaster ride. More importantly, there's a notable emphasis on the female characters who, while subjected to a world oftentimes hostile to them, exhibit tremendous growth in character, going through transformative journeys that see them shifting from passive bystanders to proactive agents shaping their destinies.

The series also boasts impressive artistic quality. The setting is visually rewarding - from the mythical creatures, down to the smallest detail like the distinct attire of each kingdom. The animation shows meticulous attention to detail, adding layers of realism to the fantastical world. Moreover, the show's soundtrack, which seamlessly blends traditional eastern melodies with more modern orchestrations, creates an immersive atmosphere that beautifully complements the extraordinary visuals.

Aside from the rich world-building and character development, The Twelve Kingdoms also stands out for its sophisticated political intrigue. There's a strong focus on politics as we're shown the varying systems of each kingdom's government. Much like in the real world, power relations and political machinations are central to the narrative. Deftly weaving political plots into a high fantasy setting, it instills a sense of reality to its mythological realm, further immersing the viewers in the story.

Yet, at the heart of everything, The Twelve Kingdoms is a tale of personal growth and self-discovery. Each character embarks on their own introspective journey and reformulates their identities through their struggles. These personal arcs, set against a wide-ranging backdrop, form a riveting narrative that's both deeply personal and epic in scope.

Given its depth and complexity, The Twelve Kingdoms is more than just a fantasy series; it's a multi-faceted exploration of human nature, moral ambiguity, and political power, artfully told through a distinct lens of high fantasy. For lovers of genre-blending narratives that are as intellectually stimulating as they are emotionally absorbing, The Twelve Kingdoms is a show worth investing time in. Although it started airing almost two decades ago, the series has stood the test of time, thanks to its timeless themes and extraordinarily compelling narrative.

The Twelve Kingdoms is a series categorized as a canceled. Spanning 4 seasons with a total of 71 episodes, the show debuted on 2002. The series has earned a mostly positive reviews from both critics and viewers. The IMDb score stands at 7.9.
