The Wicked Wicked West

The Wicked Wicked West was directed by Jon Sanders and has the alternative movie title of Painted Angels. It was filmed entirely in Saskatchewan, Canada and was distributed by Lions Gate Home Entertainment. This melodrama includes such stars as: Kelly McGillis, Brenda Fricker, Meret Becker, Bronagh Gallagher, Lisa Jakub and Anna Mottram. In the 1870’s, men were rushing out west to make their fortune in uncharted territories and this is the story of one small western town. Instead of focusing on the men of the Wild West, this movie focuses on the lives of six women and the brothel that they operate. The film begins in a typical western saloon. As the piano plays, men enjoy rounds of whiskey and a friend game of cards. Scantily dressed women mingle in between the tables and via for the affection of the cowboys and ranch hands. As a fist fight ensues, several men grab the hands of the women and head upstairs. Annie Ryan is a former prostitute that has traveled to the west to make her fortune by becoming a madam of a brothel. She is joined by Nettie, who works non-stop to support her young son and alcoholic husband. Nettie also makes a living by being an abortionist for the other working ladies. Ada is an older prostitute that’s hoping to leave the business soon and Georgie, the youngest of the group, is eager to make her way in the business. Katya is a German immigrant who is willing to do anything to survive in her new country. She is also pursuing becoming a fortuneteller and managed to survive on the ride over to America by convincing everyone that she was a witch. Eileen is an Irish immigrant who doesn’t consider America her new home but a land of opportunity. She plans on making her fortune and then returning home to her family in Ireland.
