Oblivious of her husband's deeds, she is left alone to cope with the loss of her spouse, the downfall of her comfortable life, and the birth of her child. Tragically, the stress from these events proves too much for Peyton, resulting in a miscarriage. The confluence of these horrendous events results in Peyton holding a grudge against the woman whose actions catalyzed the chain of events – Claire Bartel.

Blaming Claire for her miserable fate, Peyton schemes to take revenge. Based on a clever lie regarding her identity, she cunningly secures a position as the Bartel family's nanny, displaying an ideal balance of charm, kindness, and proficiency. Claire, looking for help with her new baby and naively trusting Peyton's disguise, brings her into their midst.

Throughout the rest of the film, Peyton's facade perfectly masks her true intents. However, while her outward behavior is seemingly perfect, her growing obsession with becoming a substitute for Claire within her own family is quite alarming.
