In the Wild West town of Purgatory, con man Latigo Smith (James Garner) is in trouble with the law after being caught cheating at cards. To escape, he hops on the first train out of town and ends up in Hornitos, a similar town to the one he just left - except this time, he decides to play it safe and get an honest job. But trouble seems to follow Latigo wherever he goes, as he soon gets caught up in the middle of a feud between two rival families: the McCanles and the Taylors. The McCanles, led by Colonel Ames (John Dehner), own a mine that is the lifeblood of the town's economy. The Taylors, led by Jenny (Suzanne Pleshette), own the local saloon and are determined to get control of the mine. Both sides hire gunslingers to intimidate the other into backing down, and Latigo is mistakenly identified as one of them. Despite his attempts to deny it, he eventually gets caught up in the fight and decides to play "the neutral guy" by pretending to work for both sides. Meanwhile, Latigo pursues a romance with Patience (Joan Hackett), the daughter of a local hotel owner who dreams of marrying the first man to successfully ride the legendary "Wild Jackass" - a wild and untamed horse that no one has been able to ride for more than a few seconds. Latigo agrees to take on the challenge, even though he's never been on a horse before, but it's not long before his lies and deceptions catch up with him. Along the way, Latigo also encounters a variety of eccentric characters, including Jug May (Jack Elam), a bumbling and dim-witted gunslinger who Latigo tries to get rid of by constantly sending him on impossible missions. Jug provides much of the comic relief throughout the movie, as his attempts to kill Latigo usually end up backfiring on him in hilarious ways. As the tensions between the McCanles and Taylors escalate, Latigo finds himself increasingly in the middle, trying to find a way to extricate himself from the situation without getting shot in the process. Despite his deceptions, however, he manages to win over the townspeople and become a hero in their eyes - even if it's only through his own cunning and quick wit. Support Your Local Gunfighter is a classic Western comedy that puts a new spin on the familiar themes of gunfights, horse-riding, and good versus evil.
