Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment is a 1985 American comedy film directed by Jerry Paris and written by Barry W. Blaustein and David Sheffield. It is the second installment in the Police Academy film series and stars Steve Guttenberg, Bubba Smith, and David Graf reprising their roles from the first film. The movie revolves around a new batch of police recruits who are trained to become law enforcers. Mahoney (Steve Guttenberg) and his fellow graduates from the first Police Academy movie return as probationary officers, trying to make the transition from rookies to full-fledged cops. The new installment follows the misadventures of the new recruits as they coincidentally stumble upon a group of corrupt cops who are running a protection racket. Led by Lt. Mauser (Art Metrano), the corrupt cops use their power and influence to terrorize local businesses into paying them protection money. Mahoney and his gang are determined to take down the corrupt cops, but they face resistance from their own superiors who believe that their methods will only make things worse. Meanwhile, Commandant Lassard (George Gaynes) is struggling to gain control of his own precinct, amid budget cuts, personnel shortages, and the scrutiny of an obnoxious media mogul (Tab Thacker). In addition to Mahoney, several other familiar characters return from the original film. Sgt. Tackleberry (David Graf), the weapons-obsessed officer, is now married to Lt. Callahan (Leslie Easterbrook), the tough-as-nails instructor. Hightower (Bubba Smith), the gentle giant who was originally mistaken for a criminal, is still struggling to fit in with his fellow officers. Jones (Michael Winslow), the sound-effects wizard, also returns to provide comic relief. The new recruits include Zed (Bob Goldthwait), a motor-mouthed troublemaker; Sweetchuck (Tim Kazurinsky), a meek and nervous officer; Kirkland (Colleen Camp), a flirtatious former beauty queen; and House (Brian Backer), a nerdy computer whiz. The film's humor is largely derived from the mismatched personalities of the new recruits and their various attempts to apprehend the corrupt cops. The movie features a number of slapstick gags, including a scene in which Mahoney and Hightower accidentally destroy a china shop while chasing a suspect. There are also several memorable one-liners, such as Tackleberry's response to Mauser's orders to turn over his gun: "I don't like people touching my gun." Overall, Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment is an entertaining and comical film that builds upon the humorous foundations of the first movie while also introducing a fresh cast of characters with their own distinct quirks and personalities. The film maintains a lighthearted and goofy tone throughout its runtime and is sure to entertain fans of the original Police Academy film.
