Ronald Zehrfeld as Johnny, despite his ruggedly charming presence, imbues an initially unlikable character with a mysterious ambiguity. Upon reuniting, Johnny fails to recognise Nelly, instead, he sees her as a woman who slightly resembles his "dead" wife. Swept away by the striking resemblance, Johnny contrives a plan to use Nelly's similarity to his wife to claim his presumed dead wife’s inheritance.

The movie Phoenix is not a typical narrative about the aftermath of the Holocaust; instead, it is an entangling suspense-drama with emotional depth.
