Where to Watch Mumford

1999

Mumford is a 1999 American comedy-drama film directed by Lawrence Kasdan, and starring Loren Dean, Hope Davis and Jason Lee in lead roles. The movie is set in a small, idyllic town called Mumford, where a new psychologist, Dr. Mumford (Loren Dean) has recently settled in. The town's residents find themselves attracted to him, and soon he becomes quite popular amongst them, despite his unconventional methods.

Dr. Mumford is shown to be different from most other practicing psychologists, as he does not believe in traditional treatment methods. Instead, he believes in getting to know his patients on a personal level, understanding their needs and helping them by being a friend. He listens to their problems, and provides them with insightful advice that not only helps them overcome their issues but also improves their quality of life. He uses a variety of unconventional techniques like talking walks, fishing and engaging them in activities like gardening instead of prescribing medication, which are often not needed.

The movie is centered around Dr. Mumford's interactions with his clients, who are portrayed in a diverse range of personalities, from the wealthy and famous to the down-to-earth locals of Mumford. One of his first clients is Sofie Crisp, (Hope Davis) the daughter of a wealthy businessman who is dealing with the pressure of living up to her father's expectations. She finds herself drawn to Dr. Mumford’s relaxed approach, and together they start to uncover some of the underlying psychological reasons behind her anxiety and fears.

However, things take a complicated turn when a romantic interest develops between Dr. Mumford and Sofie. From hereon, the movie becomes a rom-com, as Dr. Mumford starts leading somewhat of a double life, keeping the relationship separate from his professional life.

There are other stories interwoven through the movie, with clients of Dr. Mumford. There's Althea Brockett, (Alfre Woodard) a successful software executive who is feeling burnt out and overwhelmed at work. There's also Skip Skackleton, (Jason Lee) a young skateboarder who is worried about the future and his relationship with his eccentric mother.

The director, Lawrence Kasdan has done a great job in bringing small-town America to life in the movie. The movie showcases the slow pace, pleasantness, and peacefulness of small-town life excellently. This portrayal of small-town America, along with the movie's dialogue, which is both witty and intelligent, makes the movie a delight to watch.

The casting in Mumford is spot on as well. Loren Dean's portrayal of Dr. Mumford is fantastic, while the actors playing his patients are all great. Hope Davis is impressive as Sofie Crisp, the troubled heiress, who develops a romantic interest in Dr. Mumford. Jason Lee is brilliant as Skip Skackleton, the young boy who is anxious about his future.

Overall, Mumford is a compelling and entertaining movie that can be enjoyed by audiences of all ages. It's a movie that explores themes like mental health, small-town life, and romance in a fun and easy-to-watch way. Although it has been over 20 years since its release, Mumford continues to be a fan favorite and a must-watch for any fan of comedy-drama movies.
