In order to break this curse and regain his supposed handsome appeal, Rico must learn to love sincerely and be loved in return, devoid of superficiality. The movie follows his desperate attempts to find love so as to break the curse, with a lot of comic sequences scattered in his path.

Finding love whilst being the 'ugliest man', Rico encounters Prinny, a sheltered girl who is more interested in the internal beauty one possesses, mirroring back to Rico's struggle of finding true love and not mere physical attraction.
