El Mariachi

El Mariachi is a U.S. Spanish language action film that was written and directed by Robert Rodriguez. The movie features Carlos Gallardo, Consuelo Gomez and Peter Marquardt. The movie was shot using an amateur cast of extras located in northern Mexico in a town called Ciudad Acuna. The story follows Azul, a brutal criminal in the town (played by Reinol Martínez) who breaks out of the jailhouse, vowing to take revenge upon the drug lord cartel head, Moco (played by Peter Marquardt). Around the same time, a mariachi (played by Carlos Gallardo) arrived in town in the hopes of finding work, carrying his guitar in a case. Moco sends a group of hitmen to murder Azul, from his guarded villa on the town’s outskirts. When the men are dressed in black and carry guitar cases, they mistakenly believe that the mariachi is the criminal. Moco is the only one who knows what Azul looks like. In self-defense, the mariachi murders four of Moco's thugs. When the mariachi takes refuge in a nearby bar, he meets and falls in love with its owner, the beautiful Domino (played by Consuelo Gomez). Unfortunately for them, the bar is being financed by Moco. Azul stops in the bar for a beer and to get information about Moco. He accidentally picks up the mariachi's guitar case. Moco's men capture Azul but release him as soon as they find out that his case only has a guitar inside. A short while later, Moco’s men capture the mariachi - and he is identified as the wrong man. He is then set him free. Azul demands that Domino take him to Moco or he will kill the mariachi. Domino agrees to take him there. Finally, the mariachi leaves town on Domino’s motorbike, along with her letter opener and dog as a remembrance. His only protection for his future are Azul’s weapons which he has stored in the guitar case.
