Christ Stopped at Eboli

This historical drama is placed in 1935 during the fascist regime in Italy. An anti-fascist painter and doctor named Carlo Levi spoke out against Mussolini's fascist regime. As punishment, he was extradited to an isolated village called Eboli. The villagers of Eboli scarcely survive from their harvests on stubborn soil. The land has not changed much since the Middle Ages and the location is the last stop that has inhabitants. Carlo has a rough time in the beginning suffering from isolation, human despair, neglect, and a sense of abandonment. He eventually comes around and embarks on the life of poverty and enjoys aiding the villagers with his medical knowledge. Levi finds this to be an uplifting journey and becomes encouraged by their spirits and values of life.
