The Way We Were is a 1973 romance starring Barbara Streisand and Robert Redford as an unlikely couple navigating the tumultuous politics of mid-20th century America. When they first meet in the 1930s, Katie Morosky (Barbara Streisand) and Hubbell Gardiner (Robert Redford) are college students who feel an instant attraction to each other despite their wildly different backgrounds: Katie is Jewish and politically active, while Hubbell is an apathetic WASP.
