Gravion is an anime television series that premiered on Fuji TV in 2002. This captivating and futuristic series was created by Gonzo and written by the talented Fumihiko Shimo. A thrilling amalgamation of comedy, action, sci-fi, mecha, and harem genres, the series provides an exciting spin in the realm of anime. Gravion has two seasons, the first aired in 2002 comprising 13 episodes followed by Gravion Zwei—"Zwei" translating to "two" in German—featuring 12 episodes, aired in 2004.

Set in the not-so-distant future, Earth is faced with an impending doom from the mysterious threat known as the Zeravire, formidable alien creatures composed of a metallic substance that is entirely impervious to traditional forms of attack. These extraterrestrial beings have unambiguous intentions—wipe out all human life on Earth.

In the face of this seemingly unbeatable challenge, billionaire and scientist Klein Sandman takes it upon himself to protect Earth. Sandman heads an organization named the Earthgertz as Earth's last line of defense. Their weapon? An enormous mechanized unit known as Gravion, made up of four smaller machines known as Gran Divas, each operated individually before merging to form the super robot.

The storyline digs deep into the dynamics and interactions among the Earthgertz members. The team hails from a variety of backgrounds, giving the series a diversified and colorful cast. They are led by the lavender-haired Eiji Shigure, a young and determined pilot searching for his missing sister. This compels him to join the Sandman's resistance crew, piloting one of the Gran Divas. His teammates include the cheerful Luna Gusuku, the tough Toga Tenkuuji, the elegant Mizuki Tachibana, and the vivacious Eina.

Wordplay, humor, and camaraderie are a crucial part of Gravion, as much as the thrilling mecha battles and complex characters. The characters’ relationships with one another build a sense of family and unity throughout the show. The Earthgertz, despite their varied backgrounds, work together seamlessly when operating Gravion, demonstrating their work and effort as a solid unit.

As the series continues, viewers are introduced to a more profound narrative underlining the seemingly basic storyline. The mysterious background of the Zeravire and Klein Sandman’s connection to these creatures slowly unravel that add depth to the plot. Each episode effectively intertwines comedy, action, and personal drama to bring the characters' endearing quirks and complicated histories to light.

The high-quality animation of Gravion, with its rich and detailed scenery and fluid action sequences, is worth applauding. The colors are vibrant, and the technical designs of the Gran Divas and the Zeravire are detailed and well-thought-out. The intense battles are choreographed beautifully, adding an exciting touch to the show.

As for the audio, Gravion’s soundtrack features a distinctive selection of fine compositions encompassing a plethora of music genres, resulting in a grand musical experience. The two opening themes, "Nageki no Rosario" for its debut series and "Kurenai no Kiba" for its second season, Gravion Zwei, are stirring tunes that give a perfect start to the episodes. Additionally, the voice acting is praiseworthy, bringing an extra layer of personality to the characters.

Gravion, despite being a mecha series, has a strong emphasis on its characters, their interactions, and their growth. Its storyline, with their combination of dramatic tension and narrative complexity, has an allure that appeals to both mecha enthusiasts and fans of more character-focused stories. The series also manages to inject humor and light-hearted moments at just the right time, making it a refreshing departure from many darker, more serious mecha series.

In summary, Gravion is an engaging anime series that combines thematic richness with character-driven storytelling, and intricate mecha designs with crisp animation. The series' remarkable ability to combine action, comedy, and heart makes it a must-watch. With its appealing characters, striking visuals, and gripping storyline, Gravion offers an unforgettable viewing experience that leaves audiences wanting more.
