The Little Traitor

Set in the politically tumultuous time of 1947 Palestine under British regime, The Little Traitor puts forth a powerful narrative of friendship, hope, and self-realization under the dark shadow of colonial rule and the impending birth of a new nation. Proffy is essentially a child with dreams bigger than his age, making him a perfectly flawed yet lovable protagonist.

Alfred Molina plays Sergeant Dunlop, a British soldier posted in Jerusalem. Molina brings to life a character who is warm, delightful, and humane, contrasting with his role as an enforcer of the British Mandate. Enchanted by his innocent charm, Dunlop forms an unexpected friendship with Proffy, a friendship that is rooted in their shared love for language and literature.

However, this friendship is met with suspicion and loathing by the people around Proffy, given the fierce anti-British sentiment existing in the atmosphere. The boy is branded a traitor by his loved ones and the community, including his parents and friends. This antipathy forms the very crux of the movie's storyline, as Proffy is torn between his new-found friendship with Dunlop and his ingrained loyalty towards his Zionist family and his homeland's imminent independence.

Gilya Stern delivers an authentic portrayal of Proffy's mother, yet another character in the movie that bears the weight of the political tumult.
