Devastated by her husband's rejection, Tess is forced to rethink her life and the events that have led her to her current situation. Throughout the movie, Sharp does a good job of portraying the harsh realities of life in rural England during that time period. The atmosphere is often bleak, and the landscape is barren and unforgiving. The cinematography captures this with beautiful shots of misty moors, rolling hills, and unending fields.
