Where to Watch Skellig

The film Skellig: The Owl Man, released in 2009, harnesses a captivating mix of mystery, drama, and fantasy. Directed by Annabel Jankel and starring a notable cast including Tim Roth, Bill Milner, Skye Bennett, John Simm, Kelly Macdonald, and Jermaine Allen, the movie presents an enchanting tale that revolves around a young boy's unexpected and mysterious encounter with a seemingly supernatural being.

The storyline ensues with the young protagonist, Michael (Bill Milner), who is struggling with a major transition in his life. He and his parents have recently moved to a decrepit house in need of major renovations due to financial constraints brought about by his mother's pregnancy and his newborn sister's critical illness. Michael is further perturbed by his mother's preoccupation with his new baby sister, who is dangerously premature. Amidst these personal challenges and family crises, the joy of exploring his new home's garden leads Michael to a remarkable discovery.

Hidden in the decrepit garden shed is an unusual and gruff character, Skellig (Tim Roth), seemingly half-man, half bird, living in pitiful squalor. Tim Roth, known for his riveting performances, delivers a spellbinding portrayal of Skellig, fascinating and evasive. Skellig is initially a rather blunt, grumpy persona, reluctant to reveal his secrets. Michael's intrigue, however, overcomes his initial fear and, despite Skellig's aloofness, the boy becomes determined to nurture this haggard stranger back to health, promising him food if Skellig would only come out of the shed.

As the relationship between Michael and Skellig uniquely develops, so does his friendship with his new neighbor girl, Mina (Skye Bennett). Mina is a home-schooled girl who is remarkably well-versed in William Blake's poetry and nature's beauty. The philosophical Mina shares with Michael her fascination with the natural world, and his friendship with her further fuels the intrigue and fantasy element of the narrative as the plot unfurls with the mysterious Skellig being at its core.

With Skellig's health deteriorating, Michael and Mina are drawn into this enigma, as they embark on a journey of courage and empathy, defining their own understanding of the world around them, and in doing so, they unravel the inexplicable connection of Skellig with their precarious lives.

John Simm and Kelly Macdonald who play the roles of Michael's parents add another empathic layer to the narrative with their masterful performances. Amidst the new house, a sickly newborn, and a mysterious shed dweller, they grapple with newly found roles, characters, expectations, and find themselves locking horns against life's adversities.

The role of Skellig, imbued with a hint of mythology and portrayed wonderfully by Roth, invokes an element of empathy in the young heroes of the story. The notion of a guardian angel, of an inexplicable supernatural creature that confuses and fascinates all at once, challenges the audiences' perception of reality and provides a glimpse into the innocence and curiosity of childhood.

In its essence, Skellig is a heart-rendering drama with an undercurrent of mystery and fantasy. It explores themes of self-discovery, courage, friendship, family bond, and resilience. It masterfully blurs the lines between the natural and supernatural, the ordinary and the mystical, adolescence, and maturity. Each character in the film brings a distinct flavor to the narrative that not only enhances the drama but also heightens the viewing pleasure.

Jankel manages to weave these elements together in a manner that makes Skellig an unforgettable experience. The underlying ambiguity of the plot, the remarkable performances by lead actors, the engaging script and the extraordinary tale make the movie a worthwhile cinematic endeavor. Skellig is a film that encourages viewers to delve into the extraordinary possibilities of life’s moments and invites them to consider the wonders that may exist in the unlikeliest of places.
