Blindness

This movie was written by Don McKellar, directed by Fernando Meirelles and is an adaption of the novel Blindness that was written by Jose Saramago. This film stars Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Gael García Bernal and Danny Glover. The movie opens with a young Japanese man sitting at a red light. As soon as the traffic light changes, horns start blowing and a large commotion ensues. When people walk up to the car and ask him why he is not moving, he states that all of a sudden he lost his eyesight. As a concerned motorist drives him home, he describes it as an expanse of dazzling white, as if he was swimming in milk. After his wife arrives home she rushes him to the local ophthalmologist, but after testing there is nothing to identify why he has lost his sight. Later that evening while the doctor is discussing the bizarre case with his wife, people all over the city are becoming afflicted with the same white sickness. It isn’t until the doctor wakes up blind in the morning that he realizes that there is something horribly wrong. The government has quickly taken control and is quarantining anyone that has it to hospitals known as the society for the blind. As they arrive to pick up the doctor, his wife claims to be afflicted so she can stay by his side. They choose to keep her eyesight a secret and only she can see the horror that is unfolding. As more and more people come in, she watches civilization as she knew it crumble. Anxiety runs high as food deliveries become sporadic and the lack of organization leads to chaos among the patients. The soldiers are becoming aggressively hostile and the government refuses to even supply medicines. The city streets consist of derelict buildings and society no longer exists but inside the hospital insanity and violence has taken control. Now it is up to her to help get her husband and their new found family to safety.
