Arabian Nights: Volume 1
Where to Watch Arabian Nights: Volume 1

Arabian Nights: Volume 1 - The Restless One is an audacious motion picture from Portuguese filmmaker Miguel Gomes. The film stars Crista Alfaiate, Miguel Gomes, and Maria Rueff, amongst a cast of actors and non-actors alike, combining real-life elements with tales of fantasy.
The film takes its inspiration from the historical literary work, "One Thousand and One Nights" also known as "Arabian Nights," but is not intended to be a direct adaptation of these age-old Eastern tales. Instead, Gomes transports the storytelling structure and fantastical elements of the Arabian Nights into present-day Portugal, drawing parallels between the mythical stories and the socio-political realities of modern-day working-class lives.
The narrative of Arabian Nights: Volume 1 tentatively follows Scheherazade, played by Crista Alfaiate, the legendary Arab queen known for her narrative acumen. Rather than serving purely as a storyteller, the character is portrayed as a conduit who navigates us through Portugal’s tumultuous landscape.
This is not your conventional narrative film and it's scores point for being both bold and innovative. The film blends genres, oscillating between documentary and imaginative fiction, comedy and tragedy, and magical realism and social realism. This juxtaposition comes to life brilliantly in the film’s radical opening, where it navigates between a shipyard where workers are being laid off and the tale of an exploding whale.
The film is shot beautifully, capturing both the breathtaking landscape of Portugal and the intricate details of its characters' lives. The visuals are poetic, partly due to the wonderful cinematography skills of Lisa Persson and Sayombhu Mukdeeprom. Alongside the narrative, the movie offers a treat for the eyes with images that are spectacular and incredibly engaging.
The performances in the film are engrossing and heartfelt, particularly that of Crista Alfaiate, the protagonist. Despite the film’s documentary-esque style, it doesn't compromise the depth of its character arcs. Furthermore, the real magic of Arabian Nights: Volume 1 lies in its ability to let its characters shine in the midst of the country's economic crisis, reminding us that even in struggle and hardship, humanity finds its way to express joy, drama, and the will to survive.
Though the film dips into Portugal's grim socio-economic situation, it provides enough whispers of satire, comedy and off-beat humor to lighten the mood. The film is rich with allegorical elements and the lines between fact and fabrication often blur, causing the viewer to constantly question the reality and illusion within its story.
Miguel Gomes' directorial style is uncompromisingly unique, drawing on a wide spectrum of cinematic traditions and styles. With Arabian Nights: Volume 1, Gomes officially puts himself in the same league as other art-house luminaries and demonstrates not just a love for cinema but a profound understanding of it aims, aesthetics, and transformative power.
However, Arabian Nights: Volume 1 is just the opening act of Gomes’ trilogy. It leaves the viewers on tenterhooks, patiently awaiting the promise of a larger narrative arc with the sequels, Arabian Nights: Volume 2- The Desolate One, and Arabian Nights: Volume 3- The Enchanted One.
At its most fundamental level, Arabian Nights: Volume 1 - The Restless One is a strong political statement about the current state of Portugal amidst the austerity measures. But the film is much more than socio-political commentary. It’s an expansive psychedelic meditation on the country's history and traditions, and ultimately, a poignant love letter to storytelling itself.
For some viewers, Arabian Nights: Volume 1 may seem a little cryptic and elusive, but for others, it might be an enlightening cinematic experience. Its ability to merge reality with fiction and make socio-political statements through fantastical narratives sets it apart as a unique masterpiece in contemporary cinema. This is an eye-opening film about a country, about a collection of individuals, and about the realms of fantasy and reality intertwined into one.
The film does require a certain cinematic literacy and a taste for the eccentric and experimental. However, if you're willing to step into its unique world, Arabian Nights: Volume 1 is a rewarding, intriguing and thought-provoking cinematic venture. It’s a film that not only asks questions about the world we live in but also redefines the rules of narrative filmmaking.
