The story follows Jean-Louis (played by Jean-Louis Trintignant) who was once a race car driver and now works for Italian automaker Lancia as a race organizer. He lives with his son Antoine (played by Antoine Sire) and they get on very well together on their Seine River houseboat. Antoine also races speedboats and uses one to arrive at his wedding reception. Jean-Louis meets a young woman who is the sister of the bride, Marie-Sophie (played by Marie-Sophie Pochat). She picks him up, letting him know she wishes to go on an auto rally. They become romantically involved, but it is not long before the relationship fizzles. While Jean-Louis is scouting race locations, he spots old flame, Anne (played by Anouk Aimee). She is a stressed out film producer who is suffering through a bad review of her latest film. Since she is desperate to recoup her losses, she decides to use her old real love story as the main source for her new film. Suddenly, a crazed murderer who is framed by a psychiatrist rushes by in a speedboat. Also, Jean-Louis former love comes on the scene which complicates matters even more. As the couple dine on a fine lunch in a quaint and romantic restaurant, they discuss their past and future, wondering what will come to pass. Time passes and the couple stays friendly, though not intimate. Despite their attempts to rekindle their love on the beach, the couple resolves to be friends rather than romantic partners.
