Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is the annual parade presented by the department store Macy's. Macy's was founded in 1858 in New York City, and has since become an American staple with around 800 stores in the United States. The New York company has hosted and produced an annual parade in the streets of New York City ever year since 1924, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. The parade is tied for the second-oldest Thanksgiving parade in the US, and is held every year on Thanksgiving morning. In the 1920's Macy's had many employees who were first-generation immigrants, and the proud new Americans wanted to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday with a festival like those they had in Europe. Originally the parade featured live animals from the Central Park Zoo, but in 1927 they were replaced by large animal-shaped balloons, the first one being a Felix the Cat balloon. Since then there have been floats and balloons of all kinds, from Spongebob SquarePants to Shrek, Pikachu, Dora the Explorer, Yogi Bear, Popeye, and Mickey Mouse among others.
