In the year 1860, The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher: The Murder at Road Hill House takes place in a peaceful English country town. The movie is based on the true story of one of the most infamous unsolved cases in British history - the murder of three-year-old Francis Kent in Road Hill House. This movie unravels the mystery of this heinous crime and follows the investigation of the incident. The movie is directed by James Hawes and is adapted from the book "The Suspicions of Mr Whicher: or the Murder at Road Hill House" by Kate Summerscale. Paddy Considine stars as Jack Whicher, a former policeman and one of the earliest detective inspectors in the Metropolitan Police Service. He is called to investigate the murder of the young child, who was found dead in the privy of his family's country estate, Road Hill House. As Mr. Whicher is considered one of the most skilled detectives of the time, the case is handed over to him to solve. He quickly gets to unravel the many cryptic and secretive twists in the case, which lead him to suspect that there may be more to the murder of Francis Kent than meets the eye. While investigating the case, he cross-examines the Kent family, nearby townsfolk, and their staff, each with their hidden secrets and agendas. As Jack dives deeper into the case, he discovers an intricate web of lies and deceptions that the family has purposely put up to confuse him. He then takes the help of his assistant, Sergeant William Grieve (played by William Beck), to get to the bottom of the case. Jack's methods of investigation draw him into conflict with the established power of the time as he digs deeper and gets closer to the truth. The movie showcases how the case becomes increasingly complex as Jack's investigation takes him to various corners of the country. He even goes to London to meet Constance Kent (played by Olivia Colman), the sister of Francis Kent, who may hold clues to the mysterious murder. Jack believes she may have information that could crack the case open, but she proves reluctant to help him. Apart from Paddy Considine, the movie also boasts an excellent cast that includes the likes of Peter Capaldi and Tom Georgeson. Capaldi plays the role of Samuel Kent, the father of Francis Kent, while Georgeson portrays Mansell, the butler of Road Hill House, who seems to know more about the Kent family's secrets than he initially reveals. The movie's production design is impeccable, and the audience is transported back in time to the Victorian era - from the authentic sets to the costumes, which add to the overall atmosphere of the movie. The movie succeeds in capturing the era's essence, the strict class codes, and the conventions that people had to follow. The Suspicions Of Mr. Whicher: The Murder At Road Hill House is a gripping mystery drama that unravels the painful details of a historical crime. It keeps the viewer on edge throughout the movie and gets the audience invested in Jack Whicher's quest to solve the case while also giving a glimpse into the complex Victorian society of the time. The movie is a must-watch for anyone who loves a good mystery drama or has an interest in historical crimes.
