Ten days before the Mexico City games were to open, the world was watching the student protests against the government in Mexico City. The military took action and 10 protesters was killed and many protesters was arrested. When the games started, many athletes from their home countries have won medals for their events, but during the games there was controversy. One controversy during the games was the Black Power salute. When US athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos won their events in the 200 meter relay, they raised their fists in the air and bowed their heads during the National Anthem to represent Black Power. The Olympic committee felt that the political statement was out of line and not appropriate. As a result both the athletes were sent home. After the film release, the short was nominated for an Academy Award.
