Snow Falling on Cedars

The film entitled Snow Falling on Cedars is about the investigations surrounding the murder case of Miyamoto Kazuo. The film takes place in the imaginary town of Puget Sound located in Washington State Coast. Miyamoto was accused of the murder of a white fisherman known as Carl Heine. As the case unfolds Japanese men and women in the area become even more interested in the details since Miyamoto is Japanese. They start to recall all the events that transpired during the Second World War and relate it to the way Japanese were being treated at the time. A freelance writer and editor of the town’s newspaper called Ishmael Chambers decides to cover every detail about the case. He lost an arm while fighting the wars and so is very particular about certain issues. Ishmael is however in love with Miyamoto’s wife but tries to hide his feelings since he knows he cannot express them to have a relationship with her. This makes him become a little bit bias about reporting the proceedings of the case since he wants an opportunity to get Miyamoto away and take over his wife. Other people who lead the proceedings of the case include Art Moran who is the town’s marshal as well as Alvin Hooks who is the prosecutor. Nels Gudmundsson is the head of the defense team while other witnesses include Etta Heine who is Carl's mother. She strongly believes that Miyamoto killed her son because of racial reasons. Another guy involved in the case is Ole Jurgensen who is a friend of Carl and sold his piece of strawberry field to him. During the trial, the land was also contested for as Ole claims he owns it. The land actually belonged to Carl originally and the Miyamoto family used to live in a house on the farm. They were all working in the farm picking strawberries for Carl. Ole actually bought the land from Carl but later resold it to him again. At the end charges against Miyamoto are dropped when Ishmael brings evidence about the death of Carl.
