Little Stones

Little Stones is an evocative documentation of four women, each hailing from different corners of the planet, bound by a common goal: to leverage art as a mechanism to combat the pervasive social ill that is the oppression of women. Panmela Castro, Sohini Chakraborty, Sister Fa, and Anna Taylor headline this powerful narrative, showcasing how each employs their unique art form to make a tangible difference in humanity's fight for women's equality and empowerment.

The movie starts with the effervescent backdrop of Brazil, where the spray paint artist and muralist Panmela Castro uses the urban canvas of the country's shanty towns and buildings to illustrate the monstrous face of domestic violence. Castro, a survivor of domestic abuse herself, empowers women through her graffiti workshops, using art to aid in the healing process whilst raising awareness about women's rights.

Next, in the war-scarred terrains of Kolkata, India, we meet Sohini Chakraborty. As a dance therapist, Chakraborty employs the nuanced language of movement and gestures to help survivors of human trafficking and sexual violence heal from their traumatic experiences. Her organization, Kolkata Sanved, uses Dance Movement Therapy (DMT) to promote recovery and rehabilitation, offering survivors the chance to regain their lost dignity and strength through the power of dance.

The film then introduces viewers to Senegalese hip-hop singer Sister Fa. Hailing from a country where Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a deeply ingrained practice, Sister Fa uses her music's captivating rhythm and evocative lyrics to openly revolt against the practice. Her powerful words provide a voice to the countless girl victims, challenging societal norms while educating viewers about the danger and futility of such customs.

Finally, we visit the arid landscapes of Kenya, where fashion designer Anna Taylor works arduously to provide financial independence and equality to young women through her organization, Judith & James. Taylor, through fashion and design, trains and empowers these women to transcend their impoverished circumstances, fostering a sense of confidence, self-worth, and financial autonomy.

Intertwined within these main narratives, the movie also features Alyse Nelson, the CEO and co-founder of Vital Voices, a non-profit organization working towards women's empowerment. In her interviews, Nelson speaks about the need for collective action and the significance of creating space for women to lead change.

Directed and produced by Sophia Kruz, Little Stones is eye-opening in its portrayal of inequality, abuse, and violence prevalent against women in different societies.
