Harbour of Hope

Harbour of Hope is a poignant 2011 documentary directed by Magnus Gertten. It features the real-life narratives of Holocaust survivors Irene Krausz-Fainman, Stig Kinnhagen, and Ewa Kabacinska Jansson; Harbour of Hope is powerful real-world evidence of resilience of human spirit in face of unspeakable adversity. Set against the backdrop of Malmö, a coastal city in southern Sweden, the movie’s title derives its name from this vibrant harbour city which, in the spring of 1945, transformed into a beacon of hope for hundreds of Jewish survivors from Nazi concentration camps. As the war wraps up, an array of Red Cross buses can be seen bringing in the ravaged and traumatized victims of the war. Malmö Harbour, which was generally bustling with fishing boats and trade galore, saw a sight it had never witnessed before - refugees on the verge of life and death.

Irene, Stig, and Ewa - three of the nearly 30,000 survivors who came to Malmö - recount their harrowing experiences during that time. They share their own heart-wrenching tales of survival, beginning with their experiences in the terrains of the concentration camp to their journey via the Red Cross buses, and finally their arrival in Malmö.

Irene Krausz-Fainman is a lively and enduring woman, her persona not revealing the twisted turns her life took in the concentration camps. Despite her ordeal, she speaks of her history with great courage, expressing an unyielding tenacity of the human spirit. She retells the hallucinatory nightmare of her time in the camps, the companions she lost along the way, and the murky reality she somehow survived.

Stig Kinnhagen, another survivor, was a mere child back then. He was born in the concentration camp and arrived in Sweden when he was only four months old. Harbour of Hope remarkably intertwines Stig's narrative, representing the struggle of the youngest victims of the Holocaust.

Ewa Kabacinska Jansson, on the other hand, is a direct connection to Malmö. She was a 10-year-old local girl back then, and her father worked for the police in Malmö. Ewa’s story relates the transformation of Malmö, as seen through the innocent eyes of a child. Ewa's reflections on meeting the buses from Germany and the people they brought in are particularly humbling. These refugees were not just adult war victims but innocent children like herself, forever changing her perspective of life.
