This is the story of the Southern Railway's West Country-class locomotive 34027 "Taw Valley." The engine's survival is owed entirely to the determination of a single-minded Yorkshireman with a pronounced romantic streak, who, in 1980, rescued the locomotive from the brink of destruction in a scrapyard and presented it as an extraordinary birthday gift for his wife.
