In a small town in Washington state, Emily Mariposa and her business partner Adam raise butterflies to release at events such as children's birthday parties and weddings; attending the latter, if she was being honest with herself, is still a little difficult in the aftermath of a serious break-up. While Emily started and continues to do the business for her love of butterflies, nature, and their role in ecology, the same cannot be said for her cutthroat competitor Mandy Fisher, who solely does it for the bottom line in knowing little about butterflies beyond how to raise them for the business, in the process often undercutting Emily's prices. One job that Emily does manage to keep is the birthday party for adolescent Amanda.
