Coco is a 2017 computer animated fantasy film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. Set in Mexico, the story follows 12-year-old Miguel who dreams of becoming a musician like his idol Ernesto de la Cruz despite his family's generations-old ban on music. On the Day of the Dead, Miguel attempts to borrow the guitar of his deceased ancestor and famous singer Ernesto de la Cruz from his mausoleum. This transports Miguel to the Land of the Dead where he seeks Ernesto's blessing to pursue music. In the Land of the Dead, Miguel discovers that his deceased great-great-grandfather was Ernesto's former partner whom Ernesto murdered to achieve fame. Miguel meets Héctor, a down-on-his-luck skeleton who is forgotten in the living world and at risk of disappearing completely. Héctor offers to help Miguel return to the Land of the Living if Miguel takes his photo back with him so he can visit his daughter before she forgets him. As they plot to get Miguel home, Miguel and Héctor bond over their shared love of music. Héctor encourages Miguel's dream to be a musician and reveals that he wrote the songs accredited to Ernesto. Back with the deceased Rivera family, Miguel learns about his family history and their music ban: his great-great-grandmother Imelda's husband left her and their daughter Coco to pursue a music career and never returned. Heartbroken, Imelda banned music and started a shoemaking business. Miguel realizes that Héctor is his actual great-great-grandfather whom Coco never forgot. He and Héctor set out to expose Ernesto's crimes and recover Héctor's photo. At Ernesto's Sunrise Spectacular concert, Miguel publicly denounces Ernesto as a fraud and murderer in front of the dead audience. Enraged, Ernesto drops Miguel from the stadium but Héctor saves him. As the Rivera family rushes to save Miguel, he and Héctor manage to place Héctor's photo in an offering box before Héctor disappears. This restores Héctor to his family's memory. Miguel safely returns to the Land of the Living and the Rivera family lifts their ban on music, allowing Miguel to pursue his musical dream. In the present, an elderly Coco finally remembers Héctor and shares with Miguel the lullabies Héctor wrote for her as a child, reuniting them through memory and music.
