August Rush is a 2007 drama directed by Kirsten Sheridan, starring Freddie Highmore, Keri Russell, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers. The story follows the life of a musically gifted boy named Evan Taylor (Freddie Highmore) – who was given up for adoption at birth – and his search for his biological parents. Evan has the ability to hear and feel music in all things around him, which he believes is a sign that his parents, who he has never met, are musicians. The movie begins with Evan, who is living in a boys' home in New York City, glimpsing a cellist playing music in the park. He follows the sound of the music to a nearby building where he meets a child prodigy named Arthur (Leon G. Thomas III). Arthur introduces Evan to the world of street musicians and encourages him to pursue his musical gifts. Evan begins to perform on the streets of New York City, using his exceptional talent to draw attention to himself. Meanwhile, in San Francisco, Evan's biological mother, Lyla Novacek (Keri Russell), is still mourning the loss of her baby boy. She is a gifted violist who has put her music career on hold after the traumatic experience of giving Evan up for adoption. She holds on to the hope that she will one day find her son and is shocked when she hears a composition on the radio that she is convinced was written by her son. The composition was actually written by Evan, who had run away from the boys' home and made his way to a music conservatory in New York City after receiving a vision that his parents were nearby. At the conservatory, he meets another musician, Louis Connelly (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), who is struggling with his music career and personal life. Despite their conflicting personalities, Louis sees something special in Evan's music and decides to help him in his quest to find his parents. As they search for Evan's parents, Lyla and Louis begin to fall in love with each other. However, their relationship is complicated by Lyla's desire to find her son and Louis' commitment issues. Evan, meanwhile, meets with setbacks and obstacles in his search for his parents, including a run-in with Child Protective Services and the return of the villainous Wizard (Robin Williams), the man who exploited Evan's musical talent for his own gain. The movie culminates in a heart-warming and emotional concert performance where Evan, Lyla, and Louis finally all come together. As Evan takes the stage to perform his composition, movements made by Lyla and Louis during the performance make it clear that Evan's parents have been found. The movie ends with a heart-warming and emotional reunion between Evan and his parents. Overall, August Rush is a touching and emotional story about the power of music and the enduring bond between parents and children. The performances by Highmore, Russell, and Meyers are outstanding, and the movie's soundtrack contains some beautiful original music. The film may not be perfect, but it is certainly worth watching for its heart-warming message and beautiful music.
