Walkout tells an inspirational story based on actual events that occurred in 1968 East Los Angeles. Weary of constant discrimination and unfair bias against Mexicans in the educational system, ten thousand high school students protested by walking out of class. Paula Crisostomo, one of Lincoln High School's best students, had seen and experienced both subtle and blatant discrimination. With the guidance of one of her teachers, Mexican American Sal Castro, Paula first tries talking to school officials. When they refused to acknowledge that a problem existed, they began to organize students from Lincoln and four other Los Angeles high schools. Being met by violence from police officers during the first walkout prompted Paula to compel parents of the students to participate. As the struggle continued, she was betrayed by someone she trusted and cared about but continued her fight for equality at a time when tensions were high due to the civil rights movement across the country. This movie is used in classrooms today to help bring the Chicano Movement to life for students who are studying the fight for civil rights that changed the face of this country in the late sixties. The perseverance and courage displayed teach important lessons.
