The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard is a 2009 comedy film that follows Don Ready (Jeremy Piven), a used car salesman who is hired by a struggling dealership to save their Fourth of July sale. Don brings along his band of misfit salesmen, including his close friend Jibby (Ving Rhames), the over-the-top Brent (David Koechner), and the young hotshot Blake (Ed Helms). Together, they must overcome obstacles and out-sell their competitors to make the sale and save the dealership. The movie begins with Don and his team selling cars at a retirement home, where they use unconventional tactics to make sales, such as pretending to be senile to gain the trust of elderly customers. After a successful sale, they are approached by Ben Selleck (James Brolin), the owner of the struggling dealership who asks them to come to his town of Temecula, California to save his business. Don and the team accept the offer and head to Temecula, where they are met with a host of challenges. Their biggest competitor is Selleck's estranged daughter Ivy (Jordana Spiro), who has opened her own dealership across the street. Ivy is determined to put her father out of business and will stop at nothing to do so. Don and his team are not easily intimidated, however, and they engage in an all-out war with Ivy and her team to win over customers. As the Fourth of July sale approaches, tensions rise between Don and Brent, who feels that Don is not taking their job seriously enough. Meanwhile, Jibby tries to impress a local woman named Ivy, who is mistaken for Ivy Selleck's daughter. Blake, the team's young hotshot, struggles to make sales and feels like he is letting the team down. Despite these obstacles, Don and the team continue to sell cars in unconventional ways, such as staging a fake commercial to draw in customers and dressing up in costumes to appeal to different demographics. In the end, they face their biggest challenge yet when Ivy Selleck enlists the help of her wealthy husband Stu Harding (Alan Thicke) to buy every car on the lot just before the sale begins. Don and his team refuse to give up, however, and they come up with a plan to outsmart Ivy and her team. They team up with Stu's mistress, a stripper named Heather (Kathryn Hahn), to distract Stu and sneak the cars back onto the lot in time for the sale. The plan works and Don and his team make the sale, saving the dealership and winning the respect of Ben Selleck. Overall, The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard is a raunchy, fast-paced comedy that is packed with laughs. The cast, including Jeremy Piven, Ving Rhames, and David Koechner, deliver hilarious performances, and the movie is full of memorable quotes and outrageous scenes. While the plot is somewhat predictable and the humor is not for everyone, fans of crude, slapstick comedy will appreciate this movie's over-the-top antics and zany characters.
