Francesco

Francesco is an Italian film from 1989 about Saint Francis. Raised as a merchant's son, Francis decides to prove himself as a man and join an army. However, his return to society greatly horrifies him due to how starkly it seems to have changed. Renouncing his old life, Francis removes his expensive clothes in front of his father and leaves to join the indigent and diseased in their crummy portion of the town. The rest of the story is told in an episodic format, showing Francis' charitable works with the poor and downtrodden until the day that he experiences stigmata.
