In the 1890s the town of Aalst forces children to work in poor conditions, the poor do not have a right to vote, and the Catholic Church supports the practice of poor working conditions. When Father Adolf Daens is assigned to the church in Aalst, he is appalled by the activity that is supported in the town. Daens writes a few articles for the church paper, speaking out against this activity. When the residents of the town start protesting, Daens is relieved of his position at the Catholic Church. He takes leadership for the poor working class in the town.
