Brotherhood of the Wolf

This French action film takes place during the attacks of the Beast of Gevaudon. Starring Mark Dacascos alongside Samuel Le Bihan, it combines martial arts, monster hunting, romance and intrigue into a single, seamless narrative. Reports of the Beast of Gevaudon, one of history's greatest monsters and theorized by many modern scholars to be an exotic animal brought from Africa, have caught the ear of the king all the way at court. He dispatches Gregoire De Fronsac, the royal taxidermist, to catch the beast and bring it back stuffed and mounted. Fronsac brings his loyal Iroquois companion Mani, and the two of them get involved in the hunt for the beast. Through Fronsac's investigations, clues like steel fangs are found, implying that the beast is armored. There are reports of a figure the beast answers to, as well as a strange whistle. During this period Fronsac also meets and begins to fall in love with a young noblewoman, while he's also becoming embroiled in the politics surrounding the beast. In time a king's general is sent to kill the beast, but instead he orders Fronsac to make up a fake. The death of the Beast of Gevaudon is meant to silence the rumors of divine punishment that have been running rampant. Fronsac returns to hunt the beast and nearly succeeds in capturing it, but it gets away. Mani is killed by the gang that holds the beast, and Fronsac's death is faked to throw off suspicion. However, once resurrected, Fronsac comes for revenge and kills most members of the secret cabal that have been perpetrating these attacks. In the end it turns out that a corrupt class of noblemen and women have been using the beast to sow fear and to try for a power grab to make the country more religious and more austere. Fronsac leaves, traveling to the new world before the revolution.
