Boy Eats Girl

Boy Eats Girl is a horror-comedy movie released in 2005 that stars Samantha Mumba, David Leon, and Tadhg Murphy. The film sets out in a small Irish village named Dunseverick, where Nathan is an average school-going teenager who harbours feelings for his childhood best friend, Jessica. He musters up some courage to ask her out on a date, but as these things tend to, it goes downhill quickly. All goes wrong when he accidentally falls off a roof and suffers a fatal head injury.

His mother, a medical researcher, decides to inject his body with an experimental serum to bring him back to life. Her untested injection goes horribly wrong, and Nathan becomes a zombie. Not just any zombie, but a sentient one that longs for his former life, and to be with his girl, Jessica. As he roams the town, the serum soon starts affecting the other dead too, causing a zombie outbreak that the town is wholly unprepared for.

However, unlike other zombie movies, Boy Eats Girl does not lack humor in the mix. Nathan's mother includes a comedy aspect to the movie by continually cracking over-the-top jokes, and even Nathan himself has moments of being the funny one whilst himself a zombie. It is probably why the film appealed to a relatively younger audience.

The movie's horror element also stands out, allowing the use of some gruesomely fun special effects. The deaths are satisfyingly gross and over the top. The zombie virus also quickly spreads through the town, and before long, Jessica gets caught up in the chaos, her life threatened by her recently turned classmates.

Samantha Mumba delivers a brilliant performance as Jessica. She manages to seem both tough and charming at the same time, whilst David Leon, who plays Nathan, does a good job of portraying his character's struggle with his new undead existence.

Visually, the film explores the sinister aspects of the small town, pushing the limits of what can be seen with a horrific outbreak. Though short in running time, the film only lasts an hour and fifteen minutes, the director and the filmography team do an excellent job of making sure the audience feels engrossed in the world that they have built.

Overall, Boy Eats Girl is a fresh and exciting take on the zombie genre. It's perfect for those who crave an thrilling horror experience with a side of laughs. The movie breezes by, with lots of entertaining sequences that keep the viewers glued to the screen in excitement. Great performances from Samantha and David, a decent story, a horror layer for gore lovers, and comedy for younger audiences, make it a must-watch.
