Babel

Babel is a movie containing stories revolving around several different characters whose lives are intertwined. Richard and Susan are an American couple who leave their two children at home in the care of their Spanish-speaking housekeeper while they travel abroad. The couple decides to visit the Middle East, where they are shown traveling through Morocco. The two are riding a bus through the desert regions where a young boy is using a rifle his father gave him for target practice. Through a series of unfortunate events, Susan ends up with a fatal gunshot wound. Richard demands the bus driver take them to the nearest village so his wife can receive medical help. While the couple are traveling abroad, their housekeeper Amelia decides to take the children with her on a trip to Mexico, where she is planning to attend a family wedding. When Amelia decides it is time to return to the States, she asks her nephew to drive them back across the border. Unfortunately, he has been drinking throughout the festivities and is so drunk he leaves Amelia and the children in the desert soon after he crosses the border. They have no food and no water, and Amelia is afraid the children will die unless she can find help. The children are too young to trek across the desert in the extreme heat, so she tells them to stay put while she goes off to find help. Another story involves the teenage daughter of a man in Japan. The daughter desperately seeks attention from young boys at her school. When her affections are not well received, she invites a detective who was on a case involving the death of her mother over to the apartment she lives in with her father. The detective goes over under the premise that the daughter has new information, but she really wants to make sexual advances toward him. This story reveals that the daughter's father sold a rifle to a man from Morocco.
