Taboo

Taboo is a documentary television show that premiered in 2002 on the National Geographic Channel. Taboo is a look, from an educational perspective, at issues that are considered 'taboo' in various world cultures. From marriage to initiation rituals to justice, Taboo focuses on a variety of topics with the only requirements being that they are extreme and controversial. What about nudity, prostitution, sex, and drugs? All of these are viewed in very different ways in different places and make for interesting discussion and interesting television. Also, with all the pressure that is put upon achieving the perfect body in American culture, it is eye-opening to see the differences in what is perceived as the perfect body. Mentawi women in Sumatra file their teeth to sharp points, American men get buttocks implants, and Chinese men and women have their legs surgically lengthened so they appear taller-and no, that is not a White Chicks film reference.
