The English Patient, directed by Anthony Minghella, is a 1996 romantic war drama based on the book of the same name written by Michael Ondaatje. The film is set before and during World War II. The film begins with a mysterious young man, "the English patient," (Ralph Fiennes), being rescued from a terrible plane crash. He is badly burned and in need of immediate medical attention. He is taken to an abandoned Italian monastery which has been made into a makeshift hospital. At the hospital, the English patient is cared for by Hana (Juliette Binoche).
