The movie tells the story of Santiago, an old fisherman who has been going through a run of bad luck that includes a period of 84 days without catching a single fish. Santiago's young assistant, Manolin informs him he is not allowed to fish with him anymore. Instead, the young boy is being ordered by his parents to fish with those who are successful fishermen. Saddened by the loss of his young friend, Santiago embarks on a journey far out into the Gulf, where he finally catches a small fish. Using his catch as bait, Santiago hooks a large fish he is unable to reel in.
