The Crime of Father Amaro

The film entitled The Crime of Father Amaro which is also known as The Crime of Padre Amaro is about the experiences of Padre Amaro. The film starts when Padre Amaro arrives a small town known as Los Reyes where he has to start working as a leader in the church. Padre Amaro gets support from a cruel bishop who is very much involved in politics. The priest in the area Father Benito, is having a relationship with a lady who owns a restaurant. He is constructing a large building which will host a hospital as well as a recovery center. He gets the money he uses in constructing the building from a drug dealer. Father Natalio who is one other priest in the village is accused of supporting and encouraging the activities of rebels in his church Benito’s mistress has a daughter known as Amelia. Amelia is 16 years old and she teaches catechism to the young children in the area. She wants to get married to Reuben. Her major concern is the fact that Reuben is not a believer and his father an atheist. When Padre Amaro sees Amelia he is so much attracted to her. Amelia also becomes attracted to him. One day he comes to eat at Amelia’s restaurant and while serving him, starts touching his hands and asking him questions. Ruben is asked by his newspaper to write about the happenings in his town. He writes a story about Benito’s hospital being involved in extorting money from people. The catholic church deny the story and Reuben loses his job. Amelia finds out about this breaks up with him on the phone. Some members of the church attack Reuben’s house and destroy their belongings and Reuben in turn beats up Padre Amaro when he sees him later in the streets. Amaro and Amelia start having a relationship and Amelia gets pregnant and Amaro forces her to have an abortion after which she dies. Benito knows the truth but does not tell anyone.
