"Strange Brew" from 1983 is a cult classic comedy film that follows the adventures of two Canadian brothers named Bob (Dave Thomas) and Doug McKenzie (Rick Moranis). They are beer-loving, toque-wearing, and eh-saying brothers who have an insatiable thirst for free beer. The movie opens with the brothers at their favorite brewery, Elsinore Brewery, begging for free beer. However, they are quickly thrown out by the unsuspecting owner, who discovers that their last name is McKenzie. You see, the McKenzie family has a long-standing feud with the Elsinore family, which owns the brewery, and the brothers' attempt to score free beer only further intensifies the animosity between them. Determined to get free beer, Bob and Doug hatch a plan to break into the brewery and steal some beer. However, their plan goes awry when they stumble upon a diabolical scheme by the evil Brewmeister Smith (Max von Sydow). Smith is using mind control techniques to make the brewery's beer taste terrible so that he can seize control of the company. Bob and Doug, being the clueless duo that they are, stumble into this plot and unwittingly become the only ones who can prevent Smith's evil plan. Along the way, they encounter a lovestruck Pam (Lynne Griffin), who works at the brewery and whose father has been captured by Smith, and an eccentric beer-drinking scientist named Claude (Paul Dooley), who helps the brothers stop Smith's plan. The movie is full of hilarious scenes, from Bob and Doug's ridiculous antics to the over-the-top performance from Max von Sydow as the villainous Brewmeister Smith. And let's not forget the memorable "Great White North" sketches featuring the characters Bob and Doug that were originally created by Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis on SCTV. One of the standout features of "Strange Brew" is the way it satirizes Canadian stereotypes. The movie pokes fun at various Canadian institutions, such as hockey, beer, and politeness, in a way that is both affectionate and teasing. And, of course, there are plenty of "ehs" and "hosers" to go around. Overall, "Strange Brew" is a must-watch for any fan of 80s comedies, and a classic example of the kind of silly, yet endearing humor that has come to define Canadian comedy. It's a perfect film to watch over a few cold ones with some friends, and one that will leave you laughing long after the credits roll.
