Ninja Academy is a comedy action film that was released in 1989. The movie tells the story of a group of young adults that attend a ninja training school in Southern California. The film stars Will Egan as our main protagonist, Drew, who enrolls in the academy to become a ninja master. He is joined by his new friends, Max (played by Scott Strader) and Casey (played by the beautiful Kelly Randall), who are also attending the school to master the ancient art of the ninja. The three of them quickly realize that nothing about attending ninja school is quite what they thought it would be. Their teacher is a no-nonsense ninja master, Sensei (played by the talented Gerald Okamura), who does not take kindly to the bumbling and clumsy new ninja recruits. He puts them through rigid and often humorous training techniques that lead them into numerous comedic situations. The film is full of lively and entertaining characters, each with their own unique personalities that contribute to the comedic feel of the movie. There is the laid-back surfer Stegman, who is played by Michael Fitzgerald, and the uptight and serious, yet equally clumsy, Dexter, who is played by Robert Factor. We then have the cocky Jamie, played by Michael David Simms, and the sexy and dangerous Gabby, played by the beautiful Kelly Randall, who steals each scene she is in. The film's pacing is brisk, and the action sequences that unfold on screen are often exciting, entertaining, and full of surprises. The filmmakers seem to have enjoyed playing with the tired tropes of the ninja genre, offering us scenes that parody traditional Japanese myths and legends. For example, there is a hilarious sequence where our heroes are attacked by a ninja who is nearing the end of his life and has decided in his death, to take as many of them with him as he can. One of the highlights of Ninja Academy is its ability to make fun of itself, never taking itself too seriously. Director Nico Mastorakis skillfully walks the line between humor and action, providing audiences with moments of slapstick comedy and suspenseful fights, in equal measure. The film's soundtrack is also quite noteworthy. The music is by cult composer Stanley Myers and features a fun and pulse-pounding score that serves to heighten the film’s action sequences. The film also features several recognizable classic rock tracks that perfectly complement the film's overall tone. Overall, Ninja Academy is an enjoyable and entertaining film that will certainly leave viewers with plenty of laughs and smiles. While it may not elevate itself to the level of great cinema or have an overly intricate plot, the film never feels forced and remains quite effective as a fun little action comedy. The action sequences, the humor, and the pacing are all well-executed, making for an enjoyable, hour-and-a-half of entertainment.
