Where to Watch Megafault

2009

Megafault is a disaster film that was released in 2009. Directed by David Michael Latt, this film received mixed reviews upon its release. However, it is still an entertaining movie to watch for those who enjoy disaster films. The storyline of Megafault is set in motion when strange seismic activity is detected in the Appalachian Mountains. A geologist named Dr. Amy Lane (played by Brittany Murphy) is brought in to investigate the disturbances. Alongside her is a veteran emergency management specialist named Charley 'Boomer' Baxter (played by Eriq La Salle). Together, they try to decipher what is happening beneath the earth's surface. Soon, the seismic activity turns into a full-blown earthquake that threatens to destroy everything in its path. The quake is intense enough to sever a significant gas pipeline, and the resulting gas leak ignites several fires. The destruction is so severe that it causes a nuclear plant to go into meltdown. As the disaster unfolds, Dr. Lane and Boomer try to convince the authorities to evacuate the area. They discover that the earthquake was caused by a massive fault line, which they dub the "Megafault." If the fault line cannot be fixed, the seismic activity will only get worse, resulting in an even more catastrophic earthquake. The stakes get higher when the President of the United States (played by Bruce Davison) becomes involved. He sends the National Guard to handle the crisis, but it quickly becomes apparent that their efforts are not enough. With time running out, Dr. Lane and Boomer must find a way to fix the Megafault before it destroys everything in its path. One of the highlights of Megafault is the special effects. The movie's budget was relatively small, but the special effects still manage to impress viewers. The earthquake scenes are well done and feel realistic, the destruction is comprehensive, and the aftershocks are terrifyingly felt. Another aspect of Megafault that stands out is the cast. Brittany Murphy is fantastic as Dr. Lane, and her character's vulnerability and determination make her likable. Eriq La Salle also gives a strong performance as Boomer, and the two actors have good chemistry on-screen. Bruce Davison is convincing in his role as the President, bringing a sense of urgency and gravitas to his scenes. Despite its strengths, Megafault has its flaws. The script is not the most cohesive at times, and some scenes are cheesy or overplayed. There are a few logistical issues that arise as well, but for viewers who enjoy disaster films, these problems are easy to overlook. Overall, Megafault is a fast-paced, entertaining movie. The special effects are impressive, and the cast gives strong performances. While the script could have been better, the movie still manages to be a fun watch for those who enjoy disaster films.
